FXUS64 KMAF 210325 AFDMAF Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Midland/Odessa TX 1025 PM CDT Sat Jun 20 2026 ...New AVIATION... .KEY MESSAGES... Updated at 1025 PM CDT Sat Jun 20 2026 - A Heat Advisory is in effect for Sunday for the upper Pecos River valley for hot temperatures in excess of 105 degrees. - Heat stress will be a concern all next week with above normal temperatures in excess of 100 degrees. && .SHORT TERM... (This afternoon through Sunday night) Issued at 101 PM CDT Sat Jun 20 2026 Current satellite shows a cumulus field developing in the Davis Mountains. Radar shows this is not deep convection as no echoes are detected yet. We could see isolated showers and storms develop over the next few hours though coverage should be less than we have seen the past several days and little additional rainfall. The heat returns tomorrow with highs exceeding 100 degrees in most locations. The Pecos River valley from Eddy to Ward counties will be hottest, exceeding 105 degrees and a Heat Advisory has been issued. The Rio Grande valley will be very hot as well, but their lower elevation makes this more common and their criteria is a little higher and thus has not been included in the advisory at this time. We will monitor for possible inclusion tonight. && .LONG TERM... (Monday through Friday) Issued at 101 PM CDT Sat Jun 20 2026 It will either be hot next week, or very hot. Normally high pressure develops over the southeastern United States this time of year, increasing easterly steering flow and sending tropical systems into the western gulf while pushing modified semi-tropical air into West Texas. This pattern is not to be seen next week with the westerlies dominating. Thus gulf moisture remains to our east allowing us to mix to 700-500mb and creating the hot temperatures. Models show a couple of weak cold fronts approach the area but provide little if any relief. Rain chances will mostly hold to the mountains and adjacent plains. Hennig && .AVIATION... (06Z TAFS) Issued at 1025 PM CDT Sat Jun 20 2026 VFR conditions will prevail next 24 hours. Light return flow overnight will veer to southwest after sunup Sunday. Forecast soundings suggest convective temps will be too high for a cu field. Return flow resumes after sundown Sunday night as the LLJ redevelops. && .PRELIMINARY POINT TEMPS/POPS...
